Week 2 : Tutorial/Group Discussion

The second lesson of Studio I:

We had an interesting session today. Coming together as a group for te second time, we took some photos and had some fun taking them, but we were extremely ‘chop-chops’ (fast) in getting that done. We came up with a kiss-ass group name, where it incorporates each of our first name’s alphabet. And this is what we agreed upon : JaPPeG (J: Jonathan, P: Pim, P: Phong, G: Geraldine (aka me)). It somewhat means JaP for Jon and Pim being a couple! No, I was just kidding. It means JaP : Japan, and PeG: for clothes pegs. Thus, the design of our group photo and mission statement.

Introducing the group members of JaPPeG (drum rolls):

Having been given 1 week to think, do some research and studies of an interactive design project, my group have already came to an very decisive and collaborative decision that our project would be based upon the experience of a supermarket shopper. We want to create an ultimate shopping experience of the regular shoppers in a supermarket. We aim to create a comfortable, enjoyable, convenient, and a stress-free experience for the shopper.

What made us thought about this was the problems that occurred to us when we are shopping in a big supermarket (eg. Safeway). There are times when we go like “Oh no! I’m running out of time and I need to find that particular brand of balsamic vinegar!! I can’t seem to find it!” You panicked. And decided to ask the sales assistant, but to no avail. Now, isn’t this scenario sounds familiar? This not only creates frustrations but also a stressful experience shopping. Fear no more! As with all the problems of shopping in a massive supermarket, my team wanted to look in depth into these issues arising to an unpleasant experience, and hopefully create an innovative and interactive solution.

For this week, each of us have to find out more about the problems of a supermarket to a shopper. We have to source this research out by either interviewing people, finding out from websites, books, etc. I anticipate this would be a fun experience as the comments and replies that we get from interviewing people would be rather hilarious.

Off to do the readings!!

Week 1 : Readings

Being back to Melbourne and attending classes in our cosy Building 88 has brought me back into reality (of having an flipping awesome holiday back in Singapore and overseas).

Attending Studio I was always all about learning new exciting things to create! This semester, we have been introduced to “Interactive Design”. After class and reading the required readings, many ideas on the group project that we have to do just flows at high speed! But however, from the readings I understood why as designers or creators, we must never create the solution first, but go through explicit developmental and research studies to get to the end.

This not only gives anticipation to the end product, but also requires hard, tedious work. Nonetheless, the readings are useful in the sense that it taught me what interactive design was in both a brief manner and in depth. Also, the sort of professionalism of the whole orientation/ design of the readings were somewhat interesting and appealing to my eye, as it gives a very calm and arty way of making long text more enjoyable to read.
